Getting around KL, by train.
Kuala Lumpur has 11 rail lines and a busway, run by three operators, and one card works on all of them: Touch 'n Go. Bank cards and phones can't be tapped at LRT, MRT or Monorail gates yet, so get a card in your first few days. If you commute daily, foreigners can now buy a RM150 monthly pass.
Paying
One card, every line.

Getting a card
Buy the enhanced (NFC) card at a 7-Eleven or the Touch 'n Go centres at NU Sentral and Bangsar South, or ask at a Rapid KL station counter. Unlike the older cards, it reloads from your phone and takes the monthly pass.
Machines, counters or app
Topping up
Station machines take cash and bank cards; counters take QR payments too. Or link the card to the TNG eWallet app, which verifies foreigners with a passport photo and a selfie, and reload it by holding it to your phone.
Every trip
Tap in and out
The fare is worked out when you leave, so tap at both ends with the same card. On KTM Komuter the same goes for a bank card or phone: exit with the one you entered with.
Passes
The monthly pass you can buy.
Anyone, including foreigners
Rapid BulananRM15030 days
Unlimited rides on every Rapid KL train and bus: LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT, city buses and MRT feeder buses. Not valid on KTM Komuter or the airport trains. It's loaded onto an enhanced (NFC) Touch 'n Go card, which needs RM5 on it.
Malaysians only
My50RM5030 days
The same unlimited rides for a third of the price, but only with a MyKad or MyTentera. If a Malaysian colleague mentions it, this is why it doesn't apply to you.
Visitors
Rapid KembaraRM25 or RM551 or 3 days
Unlimited Rapid KL rides for a day or three, for house-hunting trips before you move. Also loaded onto a Touch 'n Go card.
Is it worth it?Over 22 working days, Rapid Bulanan beats paying per ride once your commute costs more than about RM3.40 each way, and sooner if you ride at weekends too.
Studying here? The half-price Rapid Pelajar student card has been for Malaysians only since 1 January 2026. Foreign students with a 2025 card keep it until it expires or the end of 2026; after that, Rapid Bulanan is the cheapest way to ride daily.
The lines
12 lines, three operators.
Rapid KL's lines share one fare system, so a trip that changes between them is charged as one journey. KTM Komuter and the airport trains are separate: you tap out and pay again.

Hours and fares
6am to about midnight.
Rapid KL stations open at 6am every day. Last trains leave the city centre at around midnight and the far ends of each line earlier, so check the time posted at your station. Counters close before the last train; after that only a Touch 'n Go card gets you through.
At weekday peaks, 7 to 9.30am and 5 to 7.30pm, trains come every three to five minutes on the Kelana Jaya and MRT lines, and every seven to twelve minutes the rest of the day. KTM Komuter runs far less often, so check its timetable.
Fares go by distance: a little over RM1 for a stop or two, usually RM2 to RM4 across the city and about RM6 for the longest MRT rides. MRT feeder buses cost RM1.

Questions
Trains, answered.
- Can I pay for the LRT or MRT with a credit card?
- Not yet. Rapid KL's gates only take Touch 'n Go cards and single-journey tokens. You can use a bank card to buy a token or reload a Touch 'n Go card at the station machines, and station counters also take QR payments. Prasarana is awarding a contract for bank card payments, which it expects to take up to 30 months to reach the trains after that. KTM Komuter and the airport trains already let you tap a contactless bank card or phone.
- Can foreigners buy the My50 pass?
- No. My50 is only for Malaysians with a MyKad or MyTentera. Since June 2026, foreigners can buy the Rapid Bulanan pass instead: RM150 for 30 days of unlimited Rapid KL trains and buses, from any station counter or in the TNG eWallet app.
- Do international students get a discount on Rapid KL?
- Not any more. Since 1 January 2026 the Rapid Pelajar student card, which halves fares, is issued and renewed only for Malaysian students. Foreign students who already had one in 2025 keep the discount until the card expires or 31 December 2026, whichever comes first. After that, the Rapid Bulanan pass is the cheapest option for daily travel.
- How much does a train ride cost in Kuala Lumpur?
- Fares go by distance. On a Touch 'n Go card a stop or two costs a little over RM1, trips across the city usually RM2 to RM4, and the longest MRT rides about RM6. A trip that changes between Rapid KL lines is charged as one fare. KTM Komuter and the airport trains charge separately.
- What time is the last train in KL?
- Rapid KL stations open at 6am. The last trains leave the city centre at around midnight, and earlier from the far ends of each line, so check the time at your station. Ticket counters close before the last train, after which you can only travel with a Touch 'n Go card.
- Is a monthly pass worth it?
- If your commute costs more than about RM3.40 each way, the RM150 Rapid Bulanan pays for itself over 22 working days, and sooner if you ride at weekends too. It doesn't cover KTM Komuter, so it's no help if that's your line.
- How do I get from KLIA to the city by train?
- The KLIA Ekspres runs non-stop to KL Sentral in about half an hour for RM55 one way, rising to RM65 on 1 January 2027. Tap a contactless bank card or phone at the gate, or a Touch 'n Go card with at least RM20 on it. The KLIA Transit costs the same to KL Sentral but stops on the way, and is cheaper to Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and Bandar Tasik Selatan.
